ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are three widely used AI assistants, but they do not fit every business in exactly the same way. The practical question for a small business is not simply which model is most capable. It is which tool fits the work you actually do, the software you already use, your team’s workflow, and your data requirements.
This guide compares the three from a small-business perspective without trying to declare one universal winner. Your choice can change depending on whether your business lives mainly in Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, a dedicated AI workspace, or another set of tools.
At a glance
ChatGPT: A broad AI workspace that combines conversation, writing, analysis, coding, research, and business-oriented workspace features. OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Business plan includes a shared workspace, centralized administration, access to ChatGPT and Codex, connections to business tools, and no training on business data by default.
Claude: An AI assistant with business and enterprise offerings, with current capabilities spanning knowledge work, coding, connectors, and team workflows. Anthropic has also introduced Claude for Small Business, which places Claude into tools such as QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365.
Gemini: Google’s AI experience is particularly relevant to businesses already using Google Workspace. Current Workspace plans include Gemini features in applications such as Gmail and, on higher plans, Docs, Meet and other Workspace products.
ChatGPT for small businesses
ChatGPT can work as a general-purpose business assistant rather than being limited to one application. Depending on the account and features available, businesses can use it for drafting, analysis, research, document work, coding, brainstorming, and repeatable workflows.
For teams, OpenAI currently offers ChatGPT Business with shared workspace features, centralized billing and administration, usage visibility and spend controls, business-data protections, and connections to services such as Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, and Microsoft 365. Standard seats are currently listed at $25 per user per month when billed monthly or $20 per user per month when billed annually; Premium seats are $125 monthly or $100 annually. The Business workspace requires at least two paid seats.
Business fit to consider: Businesses that want one broad AI workspace for a mixture of writing, research, analysis, coding, documents, and AI-assisted workflows.

Claude for small businesses
Claude is another general-purpose AI assistant, with products and business offerings focused on knowledge work, coding, and organizational use. Anthropic has continued adding capabilities aimed at team workflows and business integrations.
Anthropic introduced Claude for Small Business in 2026 as a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows intended to put Claude inside tools small businesses use. Anthropic lists integrations including QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365.
Anthropic has also added team-oriented capabilities such as Claude Code for business plans and Claude Tag in Slack, where teams can bring Claude into selected channels and delegate tasks using connected tools and data.
Business fit to consider: Businesses that want a general AI assistant with an emphasis on knowledge work, coding, connected workflows, or collaboration across business tools.
Gemini for small businesses
Gemini can be especially relevant when a business already works inside Google Workspace. Google has continued expanding Gemini across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet, and related Workspace experiences.
Current Google Workspace plans include Gemini features without requiring a separate AI add-on on the business plans shown on Google’s pricing page. The exact AI features depend on the Workspace edition. Google lists Gemini assistance in Gmail on Starter and broader Gemini assistance in Gmail, Docs, Meet, and more on Standard.
Google has also been adding AI capabilities for working with files, email, spreadsheets, presentations, and other Workspace content. In 2026, Google announced additional ways for Gemini to use information from files, emails, and the web in supported Workspace experiences.
Business fit to consider: Businesses already centered on Gmail, Google Docs, Drive, Sheets, Slides, and other Google Workspace tools that want AI close to their existing workflow.

The biggest difference: where the AI lives
One of the most useful ways to compare these products is to look at where your business work already happens.
If your team wants a dedicated AI workspace: ChatGPT and Claude can be evaluated as broad AI environments with business-focused features and connected tools.
If your team lives in Google Workspace: Gemini may deserve closer evaluation because Google is building AI directly into its productivity applications.
If your team needs connected workflows across several business applications: Compare the connectors, permissions, administration, and supported apps offered by each provider rather than comparing the chat experience alone. Anthropic, for example, now highlights small-business integrations across accounting, payments, CRM, design, document signing, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365.
Writing and communication
All three can assist with drafting and rewriting. For business use, test them using the same real email, proposal, newsletter, or marketing brief.
Compare the amount of editing you need to do after the first draft. Look at accuracy, tone, consistency, formatting, and how well the output follows your instructions. A tool that requires less cleanup for your particular communication style may save more time in practice.
Research and analysis
For research-heavy work, compare how each tool handles the type of information your business actually uses. Test a real research question, a set of documents, or a business report.
Pay attention to source handling, file support, context, the ability to work with structured information, and how easy it is to verify important claims. For high-stakes decisions, independently verify critical facts regardless of which AI assistant you use.
Working with your existing software
This can be one of the most important factors for a small business.
A business heavily invested in Google Workspace may value Gemini’s integration with Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, and Meet.
A business that uses a mixed environment may prefer to evaluate a dedicated AI workspace with multiple connectors. OpenAI lists connections to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, Microsoft 365, and more for ChatGPT Business.
Claude’s small-business offering is also explicitly built around connectors to tools such as QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365.
Privacy and business data
Before connecting an AI tool to company information, look beyond the marketing page. Review the provider’s current data-use policy, account controls, retention practices, administrative features, permissions, and any settings that affect how information is handled.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Business does not train on business data by default. That is useful information for evaluation, but each business should still review its own privacy, security, contractual, and regulatory requirements before using AI with sensitive information.
Do the same review for Claude and Gemini before connecting business data. Product policies and available controls can change, so use the providers’ current documentation for the final decision.
Cost: compare the whole workflow
Do not compare monthly subscription prices alone. Include implementation time, the number of users, usage limits, connected tools, administrative requirements, and the time employees spend reviewing AI output.
For example, a business that already pays for Google Workspace should consider the incremental value of Gemini features inside that environment. A business evaluating ChatGPT Business should also consider the two-seat minimum and the available Standard and Premium seat structures.
A practical way to test all three
Instead of relying on demonstrations, run the same five tasks through ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Test 1: Draft a customer email.
Test 2: Turn a rough marketing idea into three usable content options.
Test 3: Summarize a real business document.
Test 4: Analyze a small dataset or report.
Test 5: Complete a task using your existing business software and connected information.
Record the time required, quality of the output, amount of editing, ease of use, and any limitations you encounter. That gives you a business-specific comparison instead of a generic internet ranking.
Which questions should a small business ask?
Before choosing a plan, ask:
1. Where does most of our work already happen: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or another environment?
2. Do we need a general AI assistant, AI inside our existing apps, or both?
3. What types of business information will we connect?
4. How many people need access?
5. Which integrations are essential?
6. How much human review is required before AI output can be used?
7. What is the total monthly and annual cost of the workflow?

Bottom line: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can all be useful to a small business. The practical difference is often where each tool fits into your work, what software it connects to, how your team uses it, and what your business needs for data and administration. Test the same real tasks in each system before choosing a plan.
